Because the US loves histrionics, and keeping their people away from better tech that they can’t directly control.

I also do think Chinese penetration into the US and West generally is deeper than the other way around, I know there is a joke hiding in there but I am not looking.

What would you base that conclusion on?

I’d say it’s likely, because so much of our (US) infrastructure is run on a shoe-string budget and nobody is really ever held accountable for breaches; whereas I imagine in China heads would roll if, say, a foreign actor shut down the power grid.

I was referring specifically to penetration, if you are in labs at all in the West it is common to see a few Chinese placements. They are hard workers, diligent, putting in long hours, often antisocial hours when other people choose not to be there.

I think it’s because the United States wants to make China a public enemy, and keeping Americans outraged at their spying is one low key way to do it until further motivation is needed.

On the other hand, China isn’t going to have as much visibility in the English speaking press. And, since they don’t have to justify to their populace why the United States is the enemy (first, because they are authoritarian, second, because its obvious), it’s operationally better not to disclose each and every instance of US spying; it might be better to keep those ports open and feed false information.
